update on

the refuge Xperience
8 ways to shrink a church

thanks so much, everyone who participated in refuge Xperience, either by coming for the evening or by sending some love our way.  like every refuge experience, we can't recreate it or capture it for those that weren't there.  but we know this:  it helped us become even more deeply committed to the work we are doing & we are thankful for the continued love & support.

coming soon, a link to the video we showed that tells a bit of the refuge story that you can share with others.

why we care about wineskins

"new wine must be poured into new wineskins" luke 5:38

wineskin

here we are, the end of another year.  in april '08 we will celebrate the 2 year anniversary of the refuge.  in the past 20 months or so we have learned more than we could have imagined about what we believe about church, community, the Kingdom of God.  and we also know we have barely scratched the surface.  while the refuge is not a newborn infant anymore, we are still just toddlers, learning to walk.  the hardest thing about our situation is in the "old way" of doing professional church we actually do know how to run, sprint, get to the finish line.  we could have produced something far more pretty on the outside that looked a lot better and would have done the trick for a lot of people (and paid our bills a little easier!).  but we believe this is not just about the refuge.  there's a movement in the world right now, a hunger for God & community & justice & peace that has nothing to do with "church" the way most of us know it.    it has to do with the movement of God being unleashed in smaller communities who are called to live out the ways of Jesus more naturally, honestly & stripped free of politics, power & man-made systems.

so what does this have to do with wineskins?  the refuge is committed to creating some new wineskins, not just crushing some new grapes.   we believe you can't keep replicating structures & systems that do not promote life, equality,  beauty, and diffused power.  putting out some cool candles & creating a hip vibe does not make something "new" when the old structures still promote corporate leadership, power & programming over people.  when women, minorities & the marginalized do not have voices.  when neat & tidy and squared away is valued and messiness & struggle is intolerable, especially for leaders.  when church-centric behavior & building hogging is promoted & we are allowed to be insulated & self-serving. when people's giftedness & passions are squelched because they don't fit with strategic plans.

we realize creating new wineskins is way harder than making new wine.  we're not saying this is a better way than others.  we are just saying that for now, we are committed to experimenting with a whole new bottle, one developed from the words Jesus shared in the beatitudes from matthew 5 instead of the latest and greatest leadership book.  the shape is sometimes ugly. the packaging isn't the most inviting.  yeah, we know it sometimes leaks.  but it seems pretty solid & functional, less breakable, stronger in some strange kind of way. we have no idea what the 2008 vintage will be but we hope what you taste is Jesus' hope in radical and beautiful ways. we're glad we're in this together.
endofyear at the refuge
the typical question we get asked a lot about the refuge is "have you been growing?" (aka how many butts are in seats).  if that is the question we get asked, the answer is "no, not really...well, maybe a little bit and in ways that have nothing to do with our sunday gatherings"  so in typical church math that doesn't count.

we think it's time for a new question.
how about. .  .

how is your community doing at loving?  God. your neighbors. yourselves.  how are you extending Christ's heart & hope & Kingdom principles in really tangible ways?

well our answer is "not too shabby but there's always room for better"  there are always ways to love better.  to give it, to receive it.  so when it comes to loving & being transformed more and more into Christ's likeness, this will never be mastered.  but we will continue to try. while we aren't into strategic business plans in 2007 the refuge did have some things we really hoped to have in place to strengthen our community & extend our impact beyond our little gathering.  we feel really glad that many of those things came to pass.  we want to be careful about bragging and feeling like if we have a long list, we are worthwhile.  but we share it so you can celebrate with us and wonder and consider how you can continue to be a part of what we are committed to at the refuge.

this past year at the refuge we are celebrating. . .

giving more money away than we could sometimes afford in gas, food, car repairs, work clothes, and real needs * offering a lot of different voices to teach & facilitate * finishing marna's basement so that single moms & their kids can have a safe place to live * hosting a weekend of conversations in boulder/denver with our friends atheist matt casper & christian jim henderson to promote better dialogue between people who don't agree with each other  * creating a theology pub so we can wrestle with deep thoughts about God * starting a film & discussion night to connect with God and each other * hosting a creative arts evening & follow up workshop so people can express their hearts in creative ways * nurturing relationships with different like-minded ministries like joshua station, WINN, and drybones. * healing, love & hope through houses of refuge * lotsa healing prayer * kids & teens  connecting & integrated into our community * advocacy and support teams to stand alongside the hurting * giving tree for christmas * parties galore * single moms tea * walking wounded to give a place for hurting ministry leaders to laugh & get some hope * our blog * in the final stages of getting our 501c3 approved so we can begin applying for grants * spreading the word about shared leadership to anyone who will listen *  learning & practicing authenticity throughout our entire community  even when it's hard * embracing what it means to be "slow & steady" instead of "fast & furious"

here's what we know for next year:  we want to live it out together, be willing to hold it loosely, notice the beauty & laugh at our inability to master anything.
what would you do?

a dilemma. we have a little dilemma we'd like to make you aware of. it starts with a case study. read about her situation here

this christmas, may the words of st. francis of assisi sink into our hearts...

Lord, make us an instrument of Thy peace.
Where there is hatred, let us sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that we may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console,
To be understood as to understand,
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
It is in dying to self that we are born to Eternal Life.
Amen.

peace, hope & love,
the refuge
