refuge 501c3 update.

right before our christmas eve service we found out the refuge's application for our 501c3 was approved by the IRS.  yeah!  it was a long process but worth the effort since the refuge does not function like a typical church and can't exist only on donations from within. in 2008
wewill begin applying for grants (if any of you out there have grant writing experience and are willing to help, email us!)  over time our 501c3 will help us develop some of the ministries of the refuge we are deeply committed to.

spare change update

every sunday we have a bowl to dump spare change into.  over the course of the past few weeks we have collected a lot of change to donate to the invisible children of uganda.

for january, any $ we collect will go toward the 5 thai kids we support through lightbridge international.

we will continue to make this available as it's a great example how a little can go a long way.

spiritual disciplines for the   non-spiritual slug

nonspiritual slugs
it seems to be a no brainer that january is the month of new commitments, a pledge to do life better. never heard is the pledge to try and complicate, or just in general make life worse.  but most of us experience some type of natural atrophy. we often end up smoking more, not less, eating worse, not better, isolate instead of join in, and of course,
God? it seems he can end up farther away than ever.

any change can be unpleasant. health food compared to junk food is bland, unsatisfying, even repulsive. it does not matter how much information we have that certain food is better for us, information doesl not make it taste better.  it is doubtful that anyone reading this would not concur that drawing closer to God is a good idea. but what if it tastes bad?

the next few weeks we are looking at the ancient idea of spiritual disciplines--two words alone that wreak fear and panic, much less when placed together.  mostly the fear has to do with failing, the almost inevitable experience of falling short of a lofty goal and that we will forever be losers.

this is where spiritual disciplines might be different.  a resolution begins with the conclusion that we are slugs, losers. the thoughts in our minds go something like this:

"i am a loser / slob/ too fat/ weak/ selfish/ etc. and I must change" so, from day one we begin the process with the idea that we are bad if we don't change. we are bad and doomed.

spiritual discipline is completely different. it begins with the hopeful premise that i am somebody of significance, such significance that i am wanted, even desired by God.

true, we need to do something, but mostly it is in our perceptions (beliefs) of who we are, not our efforts. if we view ourselves as overweight, out of shape slugs signing up to run a marathon tomorrow, we will most likely not make it. if instead we grasp the reality that we are (spiritually speaking) almost there, totally capable, and quite frankly, loved and accepted regardless of our effort, then our motivation seems to change.

do not fear, the next few weeks at the refuge will not deepen the belief that you are a loser slug, but hopefully together we will see that we are the loved, equipped, in shape, capable people of God, just wanting a little more. . .

for the next few months at  our sunday gatherings we will be focusing in on the spiritual disciplines.
practice makes...practice.  deepening our connection with God through prayer, fasting & frugality, silence & solitude, fellowship & confession, service & submission, worship & celebration, secrecy & sacrifice.
practice makes practice

spiritual direction.

what is spiritual direction?
well, wikipedia says "it is the practice of being with people as they attempt to deepen their relationship with the divine or to learn and grow in their own personal spirituality.  the person seeking direction shares stories of his or her encounters of the divine, or how he or she is experiencing spiritual issues. the director listens and asks questions to assist the directee in his or her process of reflection and spiritual growth. spiritual direction develops a deeper relationship with the spiritual aspect of being human."

in layman's term:  a spiritual director is a guide to help a person focus in on noticing God's movement in their lives.  it's not therapy. it's not mentoring.  it's not life coaching. it is space to listen & reflect on our spiritual journey & experience with God.

in many catholic & episcopalian traditions, spiritual direction has been popular for centuries. it is becoming more valued in the protestant traditions.  typically people meeting with spiritual directors once a month.  we are grateful to know a few spiritual directors in the denver-boulder area who are willing to make themselves available for direction to those from the refuge who are interested.   most directors typically will meet with people for a love offering instead of an actual fee.  if you are interested in pursuing spiritual direction in 2008, please email us at therefuge@therefugeonline.org and we'll connect you with some potential directors

be part of what the refuge is doing!

one of the things we love about the refuge is that many people are a part even if they aren't able to participate in our sunday gatherings.  we have a lot of opportunities to serve & help in 2008. if you want to be a part, click here to see our list of needs in 2008 & see how you might be able to help serve.
current needs

other sponsorship opportunities.
in 2008 we'd love to have some people partner with us to fund some of the ministries we are deeply committed to.  our heart is bigger than our budget! if you'd like to consider partnering with us to sponsor all or part of these parts of refuge outreach, please contact kathy@therefugeonline.org or karlwheeler@therefugeonline.org. all donations are tax-deductible and will be used directly for these projects.   it would be such a relief to us to know some of these things were funded this year.

joshua station spruce-a-room. we have been on the list in 2007 to re-do a room before a new family moves in.  both times our number came up, we couldn't afford to do it.  we need $1,000 to cover the cost & we'd love to do at least one in 2008.

joshua station food - we feed approximately 80 residents & children quarterly. it costs about $350 to pull it off each time.

single mom's tea - this is one of our most special events at the refuge to honor our single moms with laughter & hope during the holidays.  it costs about $500 to pull off.  ideally, in 2008 we want to host one outside of the refuge at a ministry that serves single moms like joshua station or ?  it will cost about the same amount.

cars or car repairs - there's always a need for car donations for some moms & families in need.  we want to create a fund for car repairs.  one of the most difficult things that happens when money is scarce is the car breaking and no way to fix it.

don't be stingy  - we advocate for a lot of people in and outside of the refuge.   don't be stingy is one of our arms of extending generosity.  sometimes there are specific needs that need to be met. we do everything we can to tap into existing resources, but it would be so nice to have some extra resource to work with to specifically meet some of these needs, "scholarships" for people when they are necessary. $100, $250, $500 can go a long way.

food & gas cards - we try to have these available for emergencies.  we'd love to build up this supply so it didn't come out of the regular refuge budget.

if you'd like to help with any of these specifically let us know!
