imagine for a moment that
someone said you could build your dream home, absolutely
what ever you want--you get to design the house and pick
the perfect lot. it's a dream come
true, however, if after
only one year of life in your dream home you were once
again offered the same opportunity, the truth is you
would probably make some changes. no matter how
carefully you planned, after a year of living in
the house, you would notice what changes you'd love to
be made. you see new things, and find what was once
critical is not so necessary. the refuge is no
different.
after a year of building a dream church, we
continue to make modifications, to add new thoughts, and
let previous ones go. hopefully, we will never stop
making changes, and hopefully this issue of vertigo will
help keep the project moving along. .
.

all movements begin with small changes by a
radical minority of people. but over time,
good ideas will prevail. remember when people who
recycled were sort of environmental freaks? when parents
tossed us in the back of the car and never thought twice
about a seat belt?
now,
it is becoming the main stream of our culture to put out
the green bin filled with glass and plastic and kids have to be
in car seats until they are practically teenagers. slowly but
surely the culture shifted and what was once the norm is
now the exception.
our modest proposal to change the world is
a verb change. we believe that the wrong verb is at the
heart of what has gone wrong with American Christianity.
it's the
word "go" that is bugging us. for example, when
attempting to ferret out spiritual beliefs, it is
natural to ask "where do you GO to
church?" think for
just a moment how many times you have asked others that
question or how often you've been asked it by
others. It
seems perfectly normal, fairly benign, so what is the
problem?
let's apply the sentence structure to
another example:
"where do you GO to family?"
sounds silly, doesn't it? when you
emphasize a location. the idea of "going to church" has
so permeated our minds that if we don't go to church, we
feel actually guilty. imagine the following scenario,
you are with a group of friends sharing life at the
deepest levels enjoying a meal and conversation
together, when suddenly you
realize that "church starts" (another lame diatribe for
another time) in a half hour. in a panic you rush out
the door, hoping to make it by the first chord. to us,
that seems like a person with cancer rushing out of the
hospital to get a vitamin.
we recently interviewed a new person who
had stopped by the refuge for the first few times and
asked why they came. we probed in as
many ways as possible, but they did not give one
traditional answer, the kinds we are used to hearing
when people speak about what "church they go to." not one of these
answers mentioned that we had great teaching or music,
kids service or anything about the program. the reason they
came is that they needed a family, a place where they
could find some love. we found this
very interesting because we know how many millions of
dollars are spent in the christian church market bumping
up the things people associate with "church" when the
one resource that most people really want deep down
happens to be free.
we never want the refuge to be a place
people "go to."
we want the refuge to be a community that people
"belong to."
that was how it was for the early Christ
followers--the "church" was just a crazy rag tag group
of people who had been touched by Jesus' spirit and were
wanting to live their lives differently. they gathered
together, yes, but it wasn't about a specific location
at a certain time for a predictable service. it was about
sharing lives, resources, gaining encouragement from
God's word & the testimonies of what He was doing in
each other's lives. it was about
"living the gospel." this means
feeding the poor, loving the unlovely, caring for the
least of these, recognizing our need for God, becoming
less self-centered & turning away from the ways of
the world that tell us that power & money means
we're valuable.
if we stop going "to church",
maybe we have chance of "being the church". .

kathy stumbled on this at makeesha's blog a while
back & it was too beautiful not to
pass on. it is a lovely reminder that
Jesus isn't limited by our experience, culture,
language, or "church". God's redemptive
story always bursts
through...
The Massai
Creed
We believe in the one
High God, who out of love created the beautiful
world and everything good in it. He created man
and wanted man to be happy in the world. God
loves the world and every nation and tribe on
the earth. We have known this High God in the
darkness, and now we know him in the light. God
promised in the book of his word, the Bible,
that he would save the world and all nations and
tribes.
We believe that God
made good his promise by sending his son, Jesus
Christ, a man in the flesh, a Jew by tribe, born
poor in a little village, who left his home and
was always on safari doing good, curing people
by the power of God, teaching about God and man,
showing that the meaning of religion is love. He
was rejected by his people, tortured and nailed
hands and feet to a cross, and died. He was
buried in the grave, but the hyenas did not
touch him, and on the third day, he rose from
that grave. He ascended to the skies. He is the
Lord.
We believe that
all our sins are forgiven through him. All who
have faith in him must be sorry for their sins,
be baptized in the Holy Spirit of God, live the
rules of love, and share the bread together in
love, to announce the good news to others until
Jesus comes again. We are waiting for him. He is
alive. He lives. This we believe.
Amen. | |

geography
of grace.
many
others across the globe are talking about some of the
same things we believe so passionately
in. they are in the trenches, deeply
committed to Jesus and wrestling with what it means in
action, word, real life. sam trujillo, from
milehigh
ministries, is
one of the editors at a blog "geography of grace"
committed to conversations that challenge us
to think, respond, move, change, live a life of
grace. check it out here.
what
would it mean for you to live more of a life of
grace? who needs Jesus touch through
you?
what is
keeping you from offering it?

message |

Anyone
who sets himself up as "religious" by talking a good
game is self-deceived. This kind of religion is hot air
and only hot air. Real religion, the kind that passes
muster before God the Father, is this: Reach out to the
homeless and loveless in their plight, and guard against
corruption from the godless world.
