vertigo comes out via email once a month to subscribers. each issue of vertigo is another slice of sharing some of our hopes and dreams for the “church” and our belief that some hopes and dreams don’t have to just be dreams--they can become reality.

here we are, the end of another year. in april '08 we will celebrate the 2 year anniversary of the refuge. in the past 20 months or so we have learned more than we could have imagined about what we believe about church, community, the Kingdom of God. and we also know we have barely scratched the surface. while the refuge is not a newborn infant anymore, we are still just toddlers, learning to walk. the hardest thing about our situation is in the "old way" of doing professional church we actually do know how to run, sprint, get to the finish line. we could have produced something far more pretty on the outside that looked a lot better and would have done the trick for a lot of people (and paid our bills a little easier!). but we believe this is not just about the refuge. there's a movement in the world right now, a hunger for God & community & justice & peace that has nothing to do with "church" the way most of us know it. it has to do with the movement of God being unleashed in smaller communities who are called to live out the ways of Jesus more naturally, honestly & stripped free of politics, power & man-made systems.

we have always known we wanted the refuge to be a missional community, deeply committed to global & local social justice. we want to stay connected to bigger conversations that are happening in the world because there are great thinkers out there stirring the pot & causing others to consider hard & challenging issues on how to live out the ways of Jesus in the midst of this broken & crazy world. one of those voices is brian mclaren. some of you have read his books, that include a new kind of christian, a generous orthodoxy, the secret message of Jesus. a former english teacher & pastor, he has been a key voice in challenging christians to consider how we can live the Kingdom of God now.

imagine for a moment that someone said you could build your dream home, absolutely what ever you want--you get to design the house and pick the perfect lot. it's a dream come true, however, if after only one year of life in your dream home you were once again offered the same opportunity, the truth is you would probably make some changes. no matter how carefully you planned, after a year of living in the house, you would notice what changes you'd love to be made. you see new things, and find what was once critical is not so necessary. the refuge is no different. after a year of building a dream church, we continue to make modifications, to add new thoughts, and let previous ones go. hopefully, we will never stop making changes, and hopefully this issue of vertigo will help keep the project moving along. . .

welcome to september 07 vertigo! we are extra excited about this month's topic because it hits a place near and dear to our hearts--the ability to dialogue instead of debate, offer love & respect instead of judgement & condemnation when others don't believe the same things we believe. being a Christian doesn't mean you have to be a judgemental, arrogant jackass whose sole purpose is to tell others of their wrong thinking. ok, so some of you are saying "well, wait a minute, Jesus told us we need to speak the truth, share the gospel, not water it down." we understand the dilemma, we feel it, too. and that's the big idea here--how do we live out the ways of Jesus, really? can't we learn to be better listeners, lovers of all people? what does this mean for the "church'? for the refuge? for each of us?

when we planted the refuge 15 months ago, there were many people who thought (and secretly hoped) we'd replicate the "attractional" church model that we had been part of. it could have been so simple--a few good messages, amazing, upbeat music, a few light trees and fog machines, and we would have been golden. good communicator, solid care pastor, it was the formula for success. one problem--it violated so many of our core beliefs about what "church" is supposed to be. so instead we have chosen this harder path in the wider Christian community. at this point we aren't sure if we're smart or stupid.

most often we talk about the culture of church and faith and how to live out the life of Jesus that we want but seem so unable to do well. we also struggle, because while we are enamored with Jesus, we are often put off by some of His friends. Recently, some of His friends (another church) felt like we were not really His friends and they were mean to us. we asked the smallest favor that would have required nothing but permission, yet because we do not look like many churches, they chose to be mean and selfish. in the name of Jesus they were mean and selfish. it gave us new resolve to not be a normal church.
