vertigo 2008

vertigo comes out via email once a month to subscribers. each issue of vertigo is another slice of sharing some of our hopes and dreams for the “church” and our belief that some hopes and dreams don’t have to just be dreams--they can become reality.

a restaurant is titled after our obsession with Friday. it is clear that perhaps the biggest day of the week is Friday, the most partying, drinking, going out is on Friday. no worries, i love Fridays as much as anyone and I am not hear to rail against the debauchery and revelry. i am concerned that we understand and celebrate the whole weekend.

it has been a discussion in churches for two thousand years now: is connecting with God something i do, or is it what God does? well, we cannot fully resolve that issue but we can observe that the one who only passively watches does not often benefit. something different occurs when a person actively receives, not "works" but wants more than just wishing for a connection with God. maybe the spiritual disciplines are really all about just opening the door. . .

it seems to be a no brainer that january is the month of new commitments, a pledge to do life better. never heard is the pledge to try and complicate, or just in general make life worse. but most of us experience some type of natural atrophy. we often end up smoking more, not less, eating worse, not better, isolate instead of join in, and of course, God? it seems he can end up farther away than ever.
