Some of our guests refer to this ongoing effort of ours as “The Cafe” for short, because we serve (free) coffee and lunch, prepared by volunteers and local partners. A few of our long-time staff and volunteer-advocates sometimes refer to it by its original 2014 name, “Open Space.” Our agency partners, on the other hand, sometimes refer to it as a “day shelter.”

What’s most important to us, though, is that The Refuge Cafe is a nourishing, safe and restful collective space for our guests, volunteers, staff and community partners, alike, regardless of their circumstances.

Our team operates the Cafe on a take-what-you-need-give-what-you-can basis. In addition to lunch, snacks and non-alcoholic beverages (mostly bottled water!), and based on available supplies, we offer free:

  • Showers (first come, first served)

  • WIFI

  • Toiletries

  • Cleaning Supplies

  • Bad weather gear

  • Pet food

  • Gas cards

  • Bus passes

  • Thrift store vouchers

Our on-site advocates and staff also help guests in need navigate local resources and complete important tasks like:

  • Obtaining birth certificates, social security cards and driver’s licenses.

  • Filling out applications for jobs or financial assistance.

  • Receiving support from mental health professionals.

  • Finding a safe place to park (for those sleeping in their vehicles).

  • Connecting with appropriate local and regional agencies.

  • Donations --- We welcome and accept donations of these specific items during open Cafe hours only, so try Joyful Journeys, the Habitat Restore or the Arc if you arrive when we’re closed and need to part with your items right away. Also, please check out our Amazon Wish List for items you can have mailed directly to us.

  • Volunteers --- We have a great team, but we’re always looking to expand our capacity via new volunteers or volunteer groups who resonate with our Refuge ethos! If you’re interested, please message us.

  • Partnerships --- Feel free to stop by for a tour and a bite to eat or email us if you have ideas about business or other partnerships, meeting special needs or creatively addressing the needs of our wider community.

Broomfield Cares Mobile Outreach Team

The Broomfield Cares Mobile Outreach Team began in 2021 and is an extension of The Refuge Cafe. Staffed by Refuge advocates, social workers, Health Care advocates, and community partners this team is dedicated to bringing hospitality and connection as well as practical needs to people who may not typically access resources in our community. If you'd like to learn more on how to support this important community effort, email us.

Severe Weather Activation Plan

The Refuge Cafe is a close partner of the new Severe Weather Activation Plan (SWAP) for Broomfield and Adams counties. SWAP provides hotel vouchers for our neighbors experiencing homelessness during severe cold weather.  Anyone interested in signing up for activation alerts should visit Almost Home's site. SWAP is the successor to the Broomfield Code Blue program that the Refuge helped oversee from 2019-2022.
